Finally we learn about Judith!
Every Christian woman is familiar with Proverbs 31 and strives to be a Proverbs 31 Woman. But here is Judith who embodies what it means to be a God-fearing woman!
After the death of her husband, instead of reclaiming her femininity through freedom, pleasure, excitement, sexuality - like the world today tries to shove in our faces - Judith remains humble.
Instead of drinking her sorrows away, she fasted. Instead of traveling the world, partying, and squandering away her wealth, she lived at home and maintained her husband’s estate.
Instead of taking advantage of her exquisite beauty and sleeping with men, she practiced chastity.
What does this mean?
As a society, the world tells us it’s okay to have one-night stands. To get drunk and wasted. To seek pleasure and happiness in worldly things.
It’s much easier to conform than to sacrifice. But it takes great sacrifice and character - the character of a God-fearing woman - to NOT conform to what the rest of the world is doing.
To stand strong in spite of the struggle and pain of losing a loved one, and submit to God instead. Judith didn’t seek happiness, pleasure, or fulfillment from the world. When she lost her husband, she still had everything.
Because God was her everything.
One of my favorite quotes is from Pope Benedict XVI
“The world offers you comfort, but you weren’t made for comfort. You were made for greatness."
And as we’re about to dive deeper into Judith’s character throughout this study, you’ll see the greatness God has in store for her.
Peace be with you, my gorgeous faithful sister.
