Lent 2015 Day 7 // Are You Comfortable?

Psalm 119:49-51

Being comfortable isn’t a bad thing. Actually its kinda nice! I recently just ordered a mattress. I did SOO much research before I bought one. Sometimes I’m indecisive but whatever, I did my due diligence ;). So I didn’t want to pay a ton for it. I mean, I saw some really really nice ones for $2,000 and I was tempted to pay payments but I was like, nah, maybe when I’m married.  But I really love a good bed. I mean, I can appreciate the comfort and styles of one and to a certain degree tell the difference. Well, I ended up buying a spa sensations memory foam and gel mattress. Oh Yea! I did, I went for it!

Now what’s my point? Let me tell you! This bed is so comfortable. I mean I love it! It's so comfortable that it makes me not want to get out of bed in the morning. You know those days where you just want to lay there because you’re in such a sweet spot that you don’t want to move. Yes! Now that’s comfort.

For a bed, comfort isn’t a bad thing. It’s actually quite nice. Now what if we compared this comfort of a bed to our lives. I mean, what if we just had a comfortable life? We have all that we need and we love it! We love being where we're at and sometimes not wanting to move because we are in our sweet spot and if we move, we’ll lose the comfort.

Yea, that could be nice. That would be, for lack of a better word, comfortable. But how many people do you know achieved something great by being comfortable? How many of them grew to be a better person by staying where they were at and not changing? It can be nice and safe but we are meant to be the best versions of ourselves. How can this happen if we don’t move?

When we are uncomfortable, what happens? Ok think of a creepy guy staring at you. Is that uncomfortable? Yes! So what is our action? We move away from the creepy man. When we get uncomfortable, we take action. We challenge ourselves. We push ourselves to become better! When we are challenged, we take steps to overcome the challenge. This is not easy. It takes courage. It takes endurance. It can also take tears and the willpower to keep going even if we don’t know exactly what the outcome will be.

This is a beautiful and adventurous life! That’s what we are made for! We don’t have to leave our cities to have an adventure, I mean we can and that’s awesome if the Lord calls you to do that (and even St. Augustine said that life is a book and those who do not travel read only one page). Even if we are where the Lord calls us, we can still be comfortable; but if we engage where we are, there can be an adventure. We are not made to just sit still. God is an exciting person! Like a great lover, he wants to show us things and help us to be the best person we can possibly be.

So let’s make sure we differentiate having things in our life that can be comfortable (like my new bed) and living a comfortable life (being afraid of letting go of the comfort so we don’t have to feel the sacrifice).

Let us not be afraid to step out of our comfort and walk with the Lord into the desert. What is that greatness we are called to? Its different for everyone and how you find out is by growing in this relationship with God. I cant tell you what that greatness means for you, only He can. Go to him sisters. Be not afraid of what is to come.

Always, you are loved!

If you have time, here’s a cool (short) YouTube video on not living a comfortable life.
